This week has been delightful in the AI discourse. AI dudes: Yeah, so, there is, like, a 10% chance this technology could kill us all in less than a decade. Public: WHAT AI dudes: Yeah, but on the plus side, we're making progress on cool things. We just solved a notoriously difficult math problem. Public: Uh... okay? AI dudes: Yeah! Although... we kinda-sorta may have stolen the work of mathematicians to do it and tried to buy off one of them with the condition he throws his colleague under the bus because that colleague works at a rival AI company. Public: Uh... AI dudes: And we actually don't know if it's necessarily a good thing in the long run for these notoriously difficult math problems to be solved before we understand the full implications. Public: Uh... AI dudes: And this is while we've been stopping what may be ongoing attempts by some rogue actors to use our technology to build biological weapons. Public: Uh... AI dudes: But we're getting really rich in the process! We, specifically, I mean. Not you. You may actually be unemployed soon.

These messages from AI execs all say the same thing: things are getting very scary but we are trapped in a prisoner’s dilemma created by the imperatives of competition—aka profit driven capitalism. Incredible situation.

People like this could literally be getting hunted by a drone piloted by Fable 7.2 and they’d still call it a marketing stunt. They’ve buried themselves in a perfect epistemic tomb—no new information can reach them. Everything can be dismissed as hype. Anyone who has built themselves an ideology which can ignore all new information—because the information can be labeled fake (in this case, “marketing” etc)—is not someone you should trust, emulate, or respect. It is a deeply self-serving, self-soothing, self-satisfied way of approaching the world. It is entirely about satisfying their own egos and comfort. It is deeply cowardly. It is embarrassing. This is not the kind of person or the kind of position you should take seriously or be afraid to offend.

Has anyone considered that the greatest threat to our national security may not be beating China at AGI- it’s that we do successfully beat China to AGI but because Congress has been bought off by these Ai companies super PACs there’s no safety guardrails and it kills us all?
