This is real, and it's offensive horseshit. Battery trains have a minor, a very minor role to play as a transition technology, but in the foothills of a seismic energy crisis, swapping one form of energy dependency for another is crap politics and worse planning.

US public transit advocates: Don't just envy Europe. Start by envying Canada. Find the Canadian city most comparable to yours and see what the Canadians do in a similar situation, with similar land use and economic history.

Brutal lack of context from @robertbenzie on @FrontBurnerCBC recently saying "maybe in Canada we don't have the tradition of rail travel you have in Europe or even in China." Come on. These were rail routes in 1955. Politicians (especially Mulroney and Chretien) destroyed it.

Albany could literally be the hub of HSR lines that connect NYC, Boston, Montreal, Toronto and further west to Cleveland, Cincy, Chicago. Seems like a total economic no-brainer for upstate.

The Endangered Species Act was passed in 1973. The median Baby Boomer was 18. It was passed from pressure by Silent Gen voters, by Geatest Gen legislators. The ~doubling of the National Parks system occurred in the 60-70s. Again, same situation. The Baby Boomers keep being credited for things they ~enjoyed~ the benefits of. Not things they caused to occur. Or paid for. The defining legacy of their control of Congress has been a chronic underproduction of housing, mass financialization, an inexorable rise in inequality, and the most dysfunctional legislative sessions in American history.

High speed rail from Montreal to Toronto really is not a huge lift. We have lots of potential corridors, clear routes into the cities, and obvious demand and potential demand with significantly expanding urban rail systems and densifying downtowns - its painfully obvious.

Also ignoring that it was built for less than adding 5 stations to the blue line - it is more than 10x longer and adds 5x more stations to the network - and these are full metro stations.
