A dead MIT professor accidentally destroyed the $25 billion executive coaching industry with one hour of lecture, and ten million people have already watched him do it. He filmed it once in January 2018 and died eighteen months later. Executive coaches charge sixteen thousand dollars a session to teach a third of what he covered in that one hour for free. His name was Patrick Winston. He ran the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 1972 to 1997 and wrote the AI textbook every computer science major in the world read for thirty years. Every January for four decades, he gave a lecture called "How to Speak." His entire framework fits on a napkin. Do not read. Be in the image. Keep images simple. Eliminate clutter. Start with an empathetic connection. End with a punch line the audience can repeat over dinner. Never open with a joke. Never end with "thank you." That last rule alone has probably cost the executive coaching industry a hundred million dollars. "Your success in life will be determined largely by your ability to speak, your ability to write, and the quality of your ideas. In that order." That is the actual opening line of the lecture. Winston believed it strongly enough to spend fifty years teaching computer scientists how to talk. Founders spend $80,000 on an MBA and then hire a communications coach to teach them the same material Winston filmed once for free. Engineers write brilliant code and lose promotions to teammates who watched this lecture on the train. The lecture is free on MIT OpenCourseWare. The textbook is free on his page. Winston died in 2019. Almost none of the ten million viewers have actually implemented the four rules on the napkin. The napkin is free. The willingness to actually use it in your next meeting is the entire edge. The answer is in this video. Don't miss this gem.

One guy in Sweden built a search engine to fight Google, and it works. It's called Marginalia Search. It runs its own crawler and builds its own index instead of borrowing Bing's. It has no ads, no investors, and no loans. What it does differently: it ranks for text-heavy, non-commercial pages. Personal blogs. Old university pages. The weird corners SEO strangled. Every result tells you whether the page uses affiliate links and JavaScript, and you can filter them out. There's an "explore" mode that just shows you random sites from the index. It's open source under AGPL, so you can host your own copy. It's keyword-based, so don't type a full question at it. Type two nouns and see where you land. Every search engine now shows you the same twelve monetized pages. This one shows you the internet people actually wrote. marginalia-search.com

“People wouldn’t create anything without a profit motive.” Literally the entire internet was compiled almost virtually for free by nerds and randos. It didn’t start to suck until corporations turned it into a dystopian hellscape of ads and misinformation.

I want everyone to be fully aware that Iraq lowered the age of marriage to 9 for girls, essentially legalising paedophilia, and the world was dead silent. There are entire Epstein states out there.

1980. Not one thing on this list had a price on it. Skipped breakfast because they weren't hungry. Now it's intermittent fasting, an app and a 16:8 window. Drank from the tap. Now it's a filter jug, a mineral profile and four quid a litre in glass. Sat in the sun. Now it's UV exposure, factor 50, in Glasgow, in February, under cloud. Ate three eggs. Now it's a cholesterol conversation with a doctor working off guidance the Americans dropped in 2015. Butter on bread. Now it's saturated fat, gently redirected to a tub of fourteen ingredients and not one cow. Walked because that was how you got there. Now it's 10,000 steps, zone 2, and ninety-pound trainers for the corner shop. Salted to taste. Now it's a daily gram target and a label traffic-lighted red. Went to bed tired. Now it's sleep hygiene, a ring, and a score out of 100 before you've stood up. Milk off the doorstep. Now it's oat, fortified, and dearer than the cow it replaced. Children outside until dark. Now it's vitamin D3 in a gel cap, taken indoors. Adult obesity in England in 1980 was around 6% of men and 8% of women. It is 30% now, with two thirds of adults overweight or obese. Every line in that column used to be a habit. All ten are now somebody's revenue.

In 1935, Hollywood execs were uncomfortable with Shirley Temple and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson holding hands while dancing in 'The Little Colonel.' Despite the studio's racial anxieties, Robinson took her hand during rehearsals to guide her steps, creating Hollywood's first interracial dance partnership.
