Investors have overreacted to S&P’s US PMI survey today and ignored others that are equally useful. This chart shows that the six regional Fed business surveys released so far for September—four more will be released over the next week—collectively present a much more restrained picture of GDP growth. Historically, these surveys have had a slight edge in tracking GDP growth; notably, they did not falsely signal a recession in 2022, as the S&P PMI did. The lack of any relationship between the employment index of S&P's survey and payrolls also bolsters the case for treating its signal that the economy is booming with skepticism.
