Armenia has steadily strengthened its engagement with Europe to become a strategic partner in the region and open a new chapter in its geopolitical positioning. After the last parliamentary elections, it鈥檚 an opportunity for EPP to start assessing this development first-hand.

We finish our mission in Yerevan with insightful meetings with constitutional experts, media representatives and academia discussing the role of the Church, security and democratic reforms. There is only one way to move closer to the EU and build a future together: freedom, justice and the rule of law and we are ready to work on this path together.

At the National Assembly of Armenia, a good conversation with President Rubinyan and representatives of EPP applicant party Civil Contract about Armenia鈥檚 pro-European path and closer ties with the EU. Their internal party election reflects a clear commitment to building a strong democracy. Strengthening the rule of law and advancing judicial reform will be equally important to moving forward on this path and delivering tangible improvements for the people of Armenia.

The best answer to today鈥檚 threats is unity and a European pillar of defence. Mitterrand and Kohl made European unity irreversible through the euro. We need the same approach for defence with joint command structures, a single market for armaments, European drones and satellites.

We need 馃嚜馃嚭 friends. Prime Minister @MarkJCarney, Canada is one of them. Since CETA was applied, EU-Canada trade has grown by 80%, with 700,000 European jobs depending on 馃嚚馃嚘 exports. Trade is more than markets. It builds a world where Europe is not alone, based on mutual respect.
