Same block. Different city after dark. By day, parts of the Tenderloin look like any other SF street. At night, the drug market comes back, and the 3,500 kids who live here still can't walk home safely. We're making real progress. The drug market during the day has largely dissipated. Overdose deaths are down and SFPD and the DA's office are arresting more dealers than ever. But we won't truly shut the market down at night until we're honest about what's left. There’s a lot of misinformation today about Nolan Wells’s Snapchat, so here is what the DA actually said. She said that the “user action” being talked about was activity from other Snapchat users, not proof that someone was physically using Nolan’s phone. If Nolan was in group chats, people could keep messaging in those chats whether he picked up his phone again or not. And Snapchat does auto-delete messages depending on settings. So the presence or disappearance of messages in a group chat doesn’t by itself prove Nolan was physically using his phone. The DA is saying the evidence provided to her office indicated no one physically accessed Nolan’s phone after his last known use. If anyone claims otherwise, the DA is basically saying show it. “Again, if the Crump team genuinely has new information or evidence that Nolan Wells was murdered they should stop playing games and immediately provide it to me.” According to DA Angel Myers McIlrath, Crump’s team gave the State only selected portions of its private phone extraction, not the full download, despite being invited to provide everything to the grand jury. She also says Crump’s team previously told her office they had “no evidence of a crime against Nolan Wells.” Now, if they claim they have evidence of deleted messages, phone access, or criminal wrongdoing, the DA says they need to provide it instead of making public accusations.

Gloria/Gregory Hemingway, daughter/son of author Ernest Hemingway, is arrested in Miami after walking down the street completely naked except for a pair of a high heel shoes. When police tried to detain him/her, he/she screamed and kicked officers. Upon arrest, Hemingway gave her/his name as “Greg Hemingway,” but then asked to be called either “Gloria” or “Gregory” upon arrival at booking and said that he/she was both a man and a woman. Police asked if Gloria/Gregory is transgender and he/she answered in the negative.

Incentives drive outcomes. “Homeless” is a propaganda word used to describe people on the street who are mentally ill or severely addicted to drugs. The word implies that this is someone who fell a little behind on their mortgage payment and they’re one job offer away from getting back on their feet, which is obviously false if you’ve ever tried talking to a “homeless” person in SF, LA, NY, Austin or anywhere else. The honest reality is that we need to bring back asylums for extreme mental illness or drug addiction for those who are a serious danger to themselves or others.
