WAKE UP WEST - For 47 years, Iranians have been caught between two blades of the same scissors.
One blade came from 1979: radical Islamism, the clerical establishment, and ultimately the Islamic Republic. The other is what I call the “1953 cult”: the political ecosystem built around Mossadegh, the coup narrative, anti-imperialism, and the belief that America stole Iran’s democratic future. These groups were never identical and eventually turned against each other. But before 1979, Islamists, Marxists, MEK, and Mossadeghist shared one thing: opposition to the Pahlavi order. Together, they helped create the coalition of 1979. Before that revolution, the Pahlavi state stood between these powerful forces and ordinary Iranians. Shah’s White Revolution is one example: land reform, worker profit-sharing, literacy, and political rights for women, including the right to vote, moved forward despite fierce resistance from powerful religious and political interests, this same 1979 coalition. In 1979, Iranians lost their agency once Shah state exist no more. Today world must listen: Who speaks for Iran? When Iranians demand fundamental regime change, whose voice receives legitimacy? #javidshah regime change in Iran is Pahlavi in Tehran.
And when Iranians rally around a movement these followers of older ideological forces dislike, does democracy still mean listening to the people? Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi matters at this pivotal moment. His political significance today is not simply his family name. It also comes from Iranians who support him and trust him to carry their voices internationally as they seek to end the Islamic Republic and reach a secular democratic transition.
For decades, Western governments have heard competing narratives about Iran through academics, activists, organizations, think tanks, and media, while the 1979, and 1953 followers have promoted their own ideological version of Iranian history. But Iranians should not remain prisoners of 1953 and 1979. One blade tells us what 1953 means we are allowed to want. The other tells us what 1979 requires us to sacrifice. Break the scissors. Let Iranian people speak for themselves. Stop allowing old ideological movements to speak over a nation trying to take its country back#javidshah
