The Supreme Court on Friday sided with the Trump administration in its push to use a controversial database to review state voter rolls for potential noncitizens, pausing for now a lower court order that found that expanded system violated federal privacy laws. In a 6-3 decision, the justices granted a request for emergency relief from the Justice Department to stay a June ruling from a judge in Washington, D.C. The judge had blocked the Department of Homeland Security's overhauled database — called the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, or SAVE, system — which the administration allows states and localities to use to verify citizenship and immigration status of registered voters.

Paid collectors, he said, are turning in names already on the roll and signatures that don’t match the Qualified Voter File. “Five thousand came through our county, and they’re still coming in from organizations and groups that are out to make a buck for themselves,” Forlini said. ⠀ “One of my clerks said, allegedly, there were 47 for one person.” He called that a time suck on the people trying to run the election. “The clerks are claiming nine out of 10 are not legitimate,” he added. He said that is not how the registration law was designed, and that as secretary of state he would try to find the hole and close it. Macomb is a Detroit-suburb swing county Forlini has run as clerk since 2020. He won a second clerk term in 2024 and the GOP SOS nomination this year. ⠀ Jocelyn Benson, the current secretary of state, is term-limited and running for governor. Forlini has separately used jury-excuse lists to flag possible noncitizens on the roll. Benson’s office later said some of those names were U.S. citizens and that one noncitizen last voted in 2018 before cancellation in 2022. ⠀ DHS opened an inquiry into the Macomb noncitizen referrals after a January subpoena.
