Republicans have handed Dems a golden opportunity, if we're smart enough to see it. They fused Christian nationalism into the GOP, making it a rightwing Christians-only party - with some conservative Jews tolerated as long as they say "Judeo-Christian" and accept the MAGA variant of Christianity as our national religion. The rest of America wants nothing to do with creeping rightwing theocracy. They want separation of church and state, government neutrality on matters of faith, and true religious freedom - i.e., freedom of religion and freedom from religion. That's also what our Constitution guarantees. Dems are the party that reflects all of this but struggles to express it. If we find the courage to talk about real religious freedom, we'll be meeting the vast majority of voters right where they want their politicians to be.
Both parties face major problems when it comes to religion in the future.
The problem for the Republicans is that the vast majority of their base is white Christianity.
The white share of the population is in decline.
The Christian share of the population is in decline.
The Democrats' problem is that their coalition is a mish-mash of people with vastly different worldviews.
Atheists, Black Protestants, Muslims, Hispanic Catholics.
