People often expect survival and healing to look a certain way. But grief and trauma are deeply personal. For the first two years, this is how Inor processed what he had survived. There is no roadmap for healing. Sometimes it's just a matter of choosing to keep moving forward. #ThreeYearsLater

Imagine you're at a music festival and your job is to capture all the smiling faces around you. Except those faces quickly turn to horror when you're suddenly attacked and everyone around you starts running for their lives. People fleeing bullets and RPG missiles, friends desperately trying to find each other but then seeing videos of the girl you just danced next to - mutilated and :grapes: by merciless terrorists. What was supposed to be a fun holiday at a music festival turned to a horror that no one could have ever imagined.

Different cities. Different backgrounds. Different lives. One day changed them all. They come from different cultures, religions, and circumstances. On the surface, what they experienced was different. So was what came after. But when we listened to their stories, two things transcended those differences: their shared humanity and the enormous impact that day has had on them, and countless others. Over the next week, we’ll share their stories, in their own words. Different stories. Different realities. One shared humanity. Follow along.

Across 41 U.S. locations, Jews were the targets of cancellations, disinvitations, and boycott campaigns at least 65 times. Now, the ADL has released a new digital platform to fight antisemitism and the erasure of Jewish artists and voices in America. "State of the Arts" exposes systemic discrimination against Jews across museums, the entertainment industry, and publishing. The ADL website features scorecards for museums on how they have treated Jewish artists, along with real stories by Jewish authors and artists. We should not need to count the incidents to identify a terrible issue facing innocent Jews, but this is what it has come to.

With great sadness, we received information about the passing of Auschwitz Survivor Julia Wallach, who died at the age of 101. Julia Wallach, née Kac, was born on 14 June 1925 in Paris as the only daughter of Polish Jewish immigrants. During the German occupation of France in July 1942, her mother Marie was arrested in the Vel’ d’Hiv roundup. Julia never saw her again. On 24 April 1943, Julia and her father Joseph were arrested after being denounced. They were imprisoned in Drancy. On 23 June 1943, they were deported to Auschwitz in transport no. 55. Julia was 18 years old. In the camp, she was registered as prisoner no. 46645. Her father did not survive. Julia owed her survival in part to one of her cousins, whom she met there, and who advised her never to miss work, under any circumstances, or she too would go "up the chimney". Julia listened and went to work, even though she was extremely ill with typhus. In January 1945, she was taken on an evacuation march. During the following months, she was transferred westward, including to Ravensbrück. In April 1945, she managed to escape during a death march and eventually reached American soldiers. After the war, she recovered the family apartment in Paris, married a fellow survivor, and raised two children. From the 1960s onward, and with growing intensity in recent decades, Wallach spoke regularly in schools and public events about her deportation and life in Auschwitz. In the 2020s her testimony reached wider audiences through films made by her granddaughter, filmmaker Frankie Wallach. In 2022, she was awarded the Légion d’honneur for her educational work. May her memory be a blessing. Photo: thelastones.org/temoin/julia…

On Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year, Jewish communities across Canada faced a series of deeply alarming incidents. In Belleville, gunfire erupted outside a synagogue as worshippers gathered, critically injuring Constable Jeff Smith. In Toronto, protesters sought to intimidate people entering a synagogue to pray. And in Durham Region, a 19-year-old was charged after allegedly threatening to carry out a shooting at a synagogue. One year after the horrific Yom Kippur attack on a synagogue in Manchester, UK, we cannot allow fear, intimidation, and the need for extraordinary security to become the new reality of Jewish life. Jews should not face intimidation for entering a synagogue. They should not need armed protection simply to pray. And they should never have to calculate whether gathering as a community or living openly and proudly as Jews puts them at risk. We stand in solidarity with the Jewish community of Canada and with our partners at @CIJAinfo and @UJAFederation. We are deeply grateful to Constable Smith for his courage in protecting the community of Belleville and wish him strength and a full and speedy recovery. This cannot become normal.
Joint Statement by CIJA and Jewish Federations of Canada – UIA: Jewish Canadians are emerging from Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, to the horrifying images of gunfire outside Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, where members of the Jewish community had gathered to pray. We are profoundly grateful to Constable Jeff Smith who acted heroically in risking is own life to protect his fellow Canadians. Our entire community prays for his full and speedy recovery. The investigation into last night's events is ongoing, but one fact requires no investigation: Jewish Canadians should not need armed police outside their synagogues simply to pray safely. Canadians cannot accept a future, as now exists in Europe, in which synagogues and Jewish schools can only operate safely behind permanent armed police and soldiers with machine guns. With Parliament returning this week, governments at every level must turn their attention to the domestic situation and the growing threat of extremist violence here in Canada. We are calling for immediate action: · Leaders need to speak clearly: antizionism is driving violence against Canadians. The demonization of Israel offers a green light for extremists who target the Jewish community. This includes when governments single Israel out or hold it to a double-standard. Canadian security officials have repeatedly warned about the potential for international conflicts and grievances to be exploited by extremists at home. Governments must take that threat seriously and confront antisemitism consistently, including when it is expressed through double standards in foreign policy, and the demonization or delegitimization of Israel. · Convene federal, provincial and territorial attorneys general and public safety ministers to prioritize enforcement, disrupt extremist networks, strengthen intelligence coordination, and ensure those who threaten or perpetrate violence are held accountable. · We need streamlined processes that enable Jewish institutions to rapidly request and secure paid-duty police officers during periods of elevated attendance and risk. The framework should allow for prioritized and expedited approvals, a designated point of contact within participating police services, and access to sufficient federal funding to help offset paid-duty policing costs. · Confront extremist ideologies, organizations and foreign state actors that promote, finance, facilitate or direct violence in Canada, including the documented threat posed by the Iranian regime and its proxies. No more thoughts and prayers. The clock is ticking and our leaders must act before lives are lost.

Rosh Hashana is meant to be a time of renewal and reflection. This year, it was also met with antisemitic vandalism, threats, and harassment in communities around the world. From campuses to synagogues to the streets of Europe, Jews were targeted simply for being Jewish. Hate has no place, anywhere.
