Funny how it's always a picture of China and never one of Singapore or South Korea.

The Myth of Fukuyama's Relevance

It's not a myth, it's a fact. The East Asian tigers which developed under authoritarian dictatorships went through the transition to modernity and converged and productivity into decades, the Communist dictatorships in one decade.

Authoritarian governments are effective at getting things done - things that lead to good consequences and also things that lead to bad consequences. The issue isn’t with authoritarianism, but with the capability and morality of those in authority. Just as it is with democracy.

They're only "authoritarian" toward the capitalist class, which is what Fukuyama means and considers evil.

Your approach to governing is still abstract theory building, the way you did with your "end of history". You offer little analysis of data. You claim that China mishandled Covid opening without offering any evidence nor analysis.

Just end the history already. Seriously though, Fukuyama,we don’t even need to touch China - all Asian Tigers developed their economies under ‘authoritarian’ regimes - Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Vietnam is another example. As an Asian you’d know I suppose.

I am not so sure that democracies win every time. Whenever the Chinese government decides to dominate or capture a market (EVs, batteries, solar panels, windmills, highspeed rail, bridge/tunnel/highway/dam construction, space station), it seems to succeed, whether by hook or by crook!

Trying to have some life out of hallucinations. Israel is a democracy. And, Afghanistan is authoritarian. If only it matters in reference to the status of women. And they are way better in authoritarian governments. Both China and Russia have accorded the highest priority to women's wellbeing.

This “popular notion” about authoritarian efficiency comes only from those lost in academia and grasping blindly through theory mazes. Anyone who’s spent a day in Iron Curtain Europe, 21st century Venezuela, or Cuba anytime, laughs at that notion.

Counterpoint: before today I could never even have pointed to a single authoritarian regime that “got things done” better than open societies. China’s gains in this regard came only from opening up & copying the West; its authoritarianism was a brake, not an accelerator.
