Somewhere between 30 and 60 people in the world do serious AI safety grantmaking, each directing tens of millions of dollars a year. They moved hundreds of millions between them last year. This year it's expected to pass a billion, and the number of people making those calls isn't growing at the same rate. @coeff_giving, the largest funder of this work for most of the past decade, says the field needs more funders. @schmidtsciences has said the same. Great to see initiatives like Tailwind connecting capital with founders who can build critical AI safety infrastructure. With that much capital arriving, the coordination questions get more interesting: who decides what gets funded, who they take advice from, and what counts as a result once the money is spent.
