UBC's authorities don't want amalgamation. Demanding the province essentially annex UBC to Vancouver (opening the forested endowment lands to mass real estate development) on camera is hostile takeover stuff. Metro Van has spiritual 51st statism!
Vancouver Liberals mayoral candidate Kareem Allam calls on the next provincial government to commit to: 1. SkyTrain to UBC 2. Amalgamation of UBC/uni lands and Vancouver 3. Remove Dunsmuir/Georgia Viaducts 4. Fund growth infrastructure/services 5. Speed up housing approvals

The province has already commissioned a study looking at governance options for the University Endowment Lands, including bringing them into Vancouver. So this is hardly some wild idea. There鈥檚 also an important democratic argument: right now, people who live at UBC don鈥檛 get to vote for Vancouver鈥檚 mayor or council. This would give thousands of students and young adults who are directly affected by Vancouver鈥檚 decisions a vote, and a real voice at City Hall. For a city with the oldest average age in North America, this would be good news.

I didn't realize you spoke for UBC. My understanding is that the residents of the endowment lands have no voice at the municipal level. Wouldn't joining Vancouver give them one?

CoV should not get any more transit infrastructure until communities south of the Fraser receive massive capital investment. Translink has been taking tax revenue from south of the Fraser and giving to Vancouver for decades. It has to stop.
