I wrote in Fortune today: this is a self-serving con. The real AI threat isn’t China, it’s accelerationism.
Accelerationist-in-chief Marc Andreessen argues, “We believe any deceleration of AI will cost lives. Deaths that were preventable by the AI that was prevented from existing is a form of murder.” But “delay is murder” does not poll well, so China has become the bogeyman.
Those who invoke China know the truth. Jensen Huang says China is “nanoseconds behind America.” Trump says, “Whoever wins AI, wins.” Yet both support selling Nvidia chips to China. Chinese firms have about 5% of the world’s AI compute. Meanwhile China has managed to innovate while maintaining the tightest controls over AI of any nation.
On AI, China is not our enemy and we are not China's. Our common enemy is the race itself — accelerationism.

Sen Cantwell is saying the important part out loud. Of course there should be urgency. But the regulatory response has to meet the moment and the Trump regime is singularly focused on enabling Big AI to do whatever it wants… don’t be seduced by any individual Republicans
Republicans are suddenly waking up to the urgent need for tough AI safety rules, a sharp reversal from last year when House Republicans and Chairman Cruz tried to impose a 10-year moratorium on state AI regulations that the tech bros wanted. I welcome the urgency. But the answer is not a weak federal standard that becomes a backdoor for wiping out stronger state protections. Meaningful legislation would require the most powerful AI models undergo testing by scientists and experts at our national laboratories to assess whether they could enable sophisticated cyberattacks or aid the development of biological or nuclear weapons.
