Gulu University officially welcomed all fresh students during a ceremony held at the University Main Playground and presided over by University Management, led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Prof. Okello David Owiny, who represented the Vice Chancellor at the function. Addressing the newly admitted students, Prof. Owiny congratulated them on gaining admission and encouraged them to be happy and proud of their achievement. He revealed that the university had received more than 10,000 applications for admission but was able to admit approximately 7,000 students into various academic programmes. He noted that the number of applications received reflected the high demand for places at the university, making admission a significant achievement for the students who secured places. The ceremony marked the beginning of the freshers’ academic journey at Gulu University and provided an opportunity for University Management to formally welcome and encourage them as they embark on their studies.

Today at State House Entebbe, I met with the CAF Secretary General, Samson Adamu, and the National AFCON Task Force, led by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, who briefed me on Uganda’s preparations to co-host AFCON 2027 with Kenya and Tanzania. I directed the relevant institutions to move faster, particularly on infrastructure, training grounds, roads, airport facilities and accommodation in the upcountry host cities. We must be ready on time and to the required standards. I will also engage my counterparts in Kenya and Tanzania on the proposed single visa arrangement to ease movement during the tournament.

Gulu University Communications Officer, Mr . Ojok James Onono, has today trained Staff of the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development (MLHUD) Gulu Zonal Office in customer care and feedback management, aimed at strengthening their skills in serving members of the public. The session emphasized the principles of customer care such as timely response to inquiries, information accuracy, honesty and transparency, accessibility of customer care representatives, polite and friendly behavior and efficiency which are key in improving public service delivery. He also provided them with tips, communication channels, feedback channels and response to crisis mechanisms. The 60th anniversary celebration of Okot p'Bitek’s seminal 1966 poem, Song of Lawino, is scheduled for Saturday, 19th September 2026, at the Gulu University New Library in Gulu City, Uganda. It is amazing that another year has gone by. We give praise and honour to God for His loving kindness, mercy and grace. He has walked with us and we are at the beginning of another year! It is hard to believe that you are 82! 2026 has been a year unlike other years, and therefore we have even more reasons to give thanks to God for the blessing of life. The fact that I am here in person to wish you a happy birthday is a testament to God’s goodness and Faithfulness. Happy 82nd birthday, Mzee! May God continue to bless and use you mightily.

I spent the day in Adjumani, where I first paid my respects to our brother, the late Gen. Moses Ali, at his grave. I paid tribute to him as a wise man and patriot who understood that Uganda’s politics must be about prosperity, not tribe and religion. I also called on our people to remain united.

A delegation from Gulu University led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. George Ladaah Openjuru is currently in China for an important scientific collaboration and partnership with MP-Future Biotechnology Company Ltd. The delegation comprises; VC Prof. George Ladaah who is leading the team, Prof. Richard Echodu-Technical Expert, John Nyeko-the University Busar, Dr. Joseph Opul among other delegates. The collaboration focuses particularly on advancing point-of-care diagnostic test innovations for plants, humans, and animals for Africa. The partnership seeks to strengthen scientific research, technology development, knowledge exchange, and the translation of innovative diagnostic solutions into practical applications. This engagement marks an important step toward building stronger international research partnerships and promoting cutting-edge biotechnology and diagnostic innovations for improved health, agriculture, and animal production. Tina Ziegler, Financial Manager at the Danida Fellowship Centre (DFC), has commenced a three-day working visit at Gulu University to engage with the management and implementation team of the Building Stronger Universities IV (BSU IV) project. Ziegler began her visit on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, with a courtesy call on the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Gulu University, Prof. David Okello Owiny. She also met the BSU management team and work package leads, who briefed her on the implementation, achievements, and progress of the project. The Building Stronger Universities phase IV project is a DKK 70 million (approximately USD 10 million) programme funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.  Gulu University has participated in earlier phases of the BSU programme since 2011. Through the various phases, the university has supported more than 27 PhDcandidates, facilitated the approval of more than 15 policies, and supported the redesign of more than 15 academic programmes. The BSU partnership has also contributed to strengthening staff capacity in project proposal development and research management. Gulu University hosted Parliamentary Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation on Monday 7th September, 2026. The committee came for a field visit aimed at assessing the progress and status of research, development and innovation projects being implemented under the university’s stewardship. The Committee, chaired by Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti (MP) Kole North, was welcomed by Prof. Davy David Okello Owiny, the Deputy Vice Chancellor In charge of Academic Affairs. They specifically assessed the operationalization of cassava processing plant Project led by Dr. Okiror Grace, the Native Chicken Breeding, Stabilization and Multiplication Project headed by Dr. Beyihayo Geoffrey Akiiki and the Diagnostic test kit and fly repellant kit whose Principal Investigator is Assoc. Prof. Richard Echodu all supported through Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) funding. The oversight visit comes at a time when Uganda is focusing on strengthening science, technology and innovation as part of its broader development agenda.
