#WATCH | Varanasi, UP: On genetic study at BHU on human skeletons, Cytogenetics Scientist, Department of Zoology, BHU, Prof. Gyaneshwar Chaubey says, "... An excavation at Rajghat in Varanasi back in 1957 uncovered a human skeleton. Rajghat is one of the key archaeological sites showing that Varanasi has been continuously inhabited for around 3,000 years. Since its discovery, the skeleton has remained stored in the Archaeology Department. A few days ago, Professor Ahirwar, Head of the department, contacted us to determine whether ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis could now be carried out. Yesterday, following all established ancient DNA protocols, we collected samples with Dr Prajwal Pratap Singh, an aDNA specialist from Hyderabad. The samples will undergo radiocarbon dating to determine their age, followed by DNA analysis. The genetic work will begin with mitochondrial DNA sequencing and then proceed to autosomal DNA analysis..."
