ALT CAPTION: Rustin was a radical pacifist who had cofounded the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in 1942 and organized numerous daring challenges to racial segregation. CAPTION: During the Montgomery bus boycott, he mentored Martin Luther King Jr. in nonviolent direct action. Rustin supported King's work however he could-drafting speeches and articles, designing volunteer trainings, raising funds, and organizing rallies. CAPTION: But Rustin's sexual history constantly threatened to undermine him. CAPTION: Because he had been arrested for "lewd vagrancy." he was forced to hide many of his contributions to the movement. CAPTION: He resigned as King's assistant after Adam Clayton Powell Jr., the Harlem pastor and congressman, threatened to say King and Rustin were having an affair!
