Here's a comparison between the 5-day mean and the harmonic smoothing. The 5-day mean still retains noise so there's a significant change when using the method from the paper you posted.

Spotted a little bug in the Climate Reanalyzer SST charts.
Confirmed, only leap years have the correct daily climatology in CR. In non-leap years the daily climatology is shifted by 1 day from March 1st on. They probably don't use dates and some sort of day index instead.
I'll send them an email, it's a bug.
