I was able to test drive a Tesla for 3 days as part of my effort to determine which EV to buy. My verdict? It's so smart, it's dumb.
The car doesn't even have an ON button. So it ASSUMES you want to turn it on every time you open the door. There is no off button. So it assumes you want to turn it off every time you leave the vehicle. For example, every time I leave the vehicle to open or shut a gate, it turns off when I don't want it to. (Which is stupid.)
The FSD (Full Self Driving) feature has horrible speed control. It speeds on public roads even in "standard" driving mode, or sometimes or drives really slow for no apparent reason. I'm seeing +/- 5mph or more, randomly, on public roads, where my old "dumb" vehicle simply had cruise control that worked with +/- 1 mph.
So Tesla, with all this amazing new technology, can't even do a decent speed control when in so-called "supervised" self-driving mode. And then, if you have to take it out of self-driving because it's speeding, you can't put it back into self-driving unless you pull over and park. This is a real hassle if you're on the highway.
Climate control is a nightmare. It doesn't remember your last fan settings. So every time you get into the vehicle, you have turn back on all the fans (I have my dog with me), unlike my old vehicle which simply had knobs that would stay put where you left them.
The Tesla vehicle seems to be trying to always "out think" the driver, which makes it stupid. And it takes away all the things that used to give you control, like knobs, buttons, etc. Every time you get into a Tesla, you have to spend time to set up the climate the way you want it, instead of, say, an old 1996 Chevy Suburban which just had knobs that stayed where you put them.
So yeah, Tesla vehicles are so smart, they're actually dumb.
Hard pass. Tesla shouldn't have taken away the controls from the driver, and it shouldn't assume what the driver wants to do when entering or exiting the vehicle. These are bad engineering assumptions, and they make the vehicle super annoying.
