He claimed the boycott had little impact on Americans. During the interview, he appeared proud and smug when saying he simply drives across the border to buy bourbon because “I like my bourbon.” If that’s the perspective of the expert presented on the boycott’s effectiveness, viewers deserved challenging questions. I might have missed it, but CBC appeared not to challenge him. It seems they never asked about available data on the boycott’s impact on Kentucky bourbon producers or the broader U.S. bourbon and wine industries. Nor did they explore why Trump is threatening 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, in part because of the boycott. Expert opinions are important. What is he trying to import from the USA and impose on us? On Canada Day, this MP chose to promote division rather than unity. Jamil Jivani actually makes Pierre Poilievre look like a moderate and even acceptable. He talks about who belongs and who should assimilate. Assimilate into whose culture? Who decides what “Canadian culture” is? Politicians? Cultural warriors like him? Or Canadians together? Canada has traditionally spoken about integration: participating fully in Canadian society while respecting our shared civic values, not demanding that people abandon their identity. Canada also needs common-sense immigration policies that put the needs of Canadian citizens and permanent residents first. If managed correctly, those goals are entirely compatible with integration. Jivani’s vision increasingly resembles the culture war politics emerging from the American Christian right. That’s not the Canada I recognize. Misinformation 1) “We broke the trade rules many times.” False. The facts: • There were two USMCA dairy panels. • The U.S. won the first. • Canada changed its allocation system. • The U.S. lost the second. Since then, U.S. dairy lobby groups have continued to complain. Ask them about the recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH or rBST), a synthetic hormone used by some dairy farmers to increase milk production. 2) The famous 200%–300% dairy tariffs? Those only apply if U.S. exports exceed the quota levels negotiated in Trump’s own USMCA agreement. The problem with the outrage is that many of those quotas are not even filled. Some analyses put average utilization around 42%. In many cases, the U.S. isn’t using the access it already has. 3) “Canadian milk and butter are the worst in the G20.” Source? There is no recognized G20 ranking of dairy quality that I’m aware of. This appears to be completely made up. 4) “Canada has been tanking for 20 years.” Really? Canada’s GDP is larger than it was 20 years ago. Canada’s population is larger. Employment is higher. Exports are higher. I am not interested in the victim narrative: mystified Canadians facing inexplicable wrath, endless threats, sentiment charts, and a 74% unfavourable view of the U.S. We know all that. Shall we all wring our hands? Rush to Washington and acquiesce? Didn’t work for Starmer. Did it? This might have been useful last year. A lot has changed. Trump is in trouble and weakened. Trump’s approval is at record lows, dipping below 40% in multiple trackers, with net ratings in the minus-20s amid the Iran fallout, Hormuz chaos, Supreme Court tariff overrulings, and looming midterm pressure. The Trump administration is chaotic and distracted: firings, Hegseth, ICE, Epstein, and Trump’s erratic and bizarre behaviour. Canada has a different leader and a different approach. He is a respected economist who leads a Liberal government with a majority after the April by-election sweep. With a near-record-high approval rating (58-68% range in recent polls), the party holds double-digit leads. He has sown the seeds for economic resilience through diversification and has not been rattled by the rhetoric. Yes, we’re in for a tough fight. It’s going to be very nasty, but we have to brace ourselves. We have to show resolve and resilience. Cowering in victimhood will do nothing. It only emboldens Trump.
