Via Grok: 1990s climate models (Hansen/IPCC era) ran on Cray Y-MP/C90 machines: ~2–16 GFLOPS peak. A single modern AI GPU is very roughly a million times more powerful than that. A big LLM training cluster is a Carnival cruise ship to their passenger car. The Bitcoin network is the whole worldwide shipping industry. Same physics, wildly different hardware. I wonder why so many people STILL have knickers in a twist over predictions made based on, if not chicken entrails and tea leaves, maybe stone knives and bear claws.

🚨BREAKING: Shasta County, CA Happening live: Patriots surround Clint Curtis and the registrar’s office as November 2024 ballots are being shredded, despite the voters crying out to preserve these materials for investigation.
🚨 CALIFORNIA: This is happening NOW. 2024 election materials are being pulled from storage ahead of destruction tomorrow. But when the boxes were opened in front of media, they didn’t just contain ballots. ELECTION LOGS WERE INSIDE. Logs that should be preserved for 5 years. Then another box was opened. MORE LOGS. It didn’t stop. These records were stored with ballots headed for destruction, and Shasta County lead attorney, Joe Larmour, allegedly declined going or sending anyone to the registrar’s office to witness what ROV Clint Curtis and team were discovering. Before anything gets shredded tomorrow, California needs to answer one question: WHAT ARE THESE RECORDS — AND ARE THEY LEGALLY ELIGIBLE FOR DESTRUCTION? Thank you, Arne, Edward, for capturing this alarming moment. Watch the footage 👇

I conjecture that many well-educated people internalize the Marxist "Labor Theory of Value" -- incorrectly. There is this notion common in academia that pay rates somehow should rise with the number of college-credit-hours taken. More credit hours SHOULD bring higher value. Doctors have years of training and should be highly paid. A graduate with 130 hours of Liberal Arts should be at least "well paid" ... by this notion, more than a truck driver or a retail cashier. Not labor hours, but college credit hours, are the source of value; and those who HAVE many hours of college credit but are NOT well paid deduce that somewhere someone (called a "capitalist") is exploiting them; and appropriating their contributions to society,.

A high school physics teacher in Oklahoma showed a live SpaceX launch during class because it aligned with the unit on Newtonian mechanics. The students expected to be bored. A rocket launch is a rocket launch. Most of them had seen clips before. The booster separated. It flipped around. It fired its engines in reverse. And it landed upright on a drone ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The room went silent. Then one student said "wait, that actually just happened? that's not CGI?" The teacher rewound the landing footage and played it again. Then again. He played it 4 times because the students kept asking to see it. A student in the back of the room who had been failing physics all semester asked how the rocket knew where to land. The teacher explained thrust vector control, grid fins, and computational guidance. The failing student took notes for the first time all year. Actual handwritten notes. The teacher said afterward that nothing he had taught in 15 years of teaching produced that reaction. Not demonstrations. Not lab experiments. Not guest speakers. A live rocket landing on a barge in the ocean did in 30 seconds what his lesson plans hadn't done in a semester: it made a 16 year old who didn't care about physics ask how something worked. The student finished the semester with a C. Not remarkable on paper. But the student had been on track for an F and the inflection point was a 30 second video of a rocket landing that made the theoretical suddenly real. SpaceX doesn't have an education department. It doesn't fund classroom programs. It doesn't design curriculum. But every live launch that a teacher shows during class is the most effective physics lesson available to the American education system. The curriculum can't compete with a booster landing upright on a barge while 30 teenagers watch with their mouths open. The best physics lesson in history wasn't designed by an educator. It was designed by an engineer who wanted to reuse a rocket.

This would be an amazing story setting.
The best idea for a war movie that has not yet been made is the fate of the 30,000 Christian samurai who fled Japan when their religion was outlawed in the early 1600s. The Spanish embarked them on ships and took them away to the Philippines, where they fought alongside the Spanish against the Moros. After the Moros were subdued (for that time), the samurai settled down with Christian Filipinas and vanished. Imagine the film - legitimate samurai alongside real conquistators fighting Moro headhunters. Wow!

Wait what. The supposed number one school for proficiency in math and reading in Minnesota only has 76% proficient students…. Something is terribly wrong if the NUMBER ONE school has 1 out of 4 students falling behind.
Only in Minnesota. 76% is #1 in the state. This means 24% are behind! This is absolutely humiliating that they even are bragging about this!

Europe is finding itself sandwiched from all sides when it comes to refined products — diesel in particular (some of the damage is due to the US-Iran war; some is due to Ukraine-Russia; some is due to China, and a lot is self-inflicted). Policy response: Head in the sand.

BREAKING: Georgia State Election Board Executive Director James Mills has formally requested DOJ intervention before the November 2026 election. His letter calls for immediate fixes to Georgia’s Dominion voting system, protection of ballot secrecy, and an end to QR-code tabulation that voters cannot verify. It also seeks investigations into alleged alteration and withholding of election records and the sharing of voter registration and motor vehicle data with outside organizations — calling for action against officials responsible for wrongdoing. 🔥 WOW! A Peterbilt worker just DIRECTLY confirmed Trump's tariffs have DRAMATICALLY boosted employment at their Texas factory "Because of your tariffs, we have been able to increase production and hire 1,000 EMPLOYEES." And her son was one of them — making her family a THIRD GENERATION Peterbilt family.

I spoke with a number of current and retired admirals yesterday, then checked in with key contacts across the Navy today. Beyond @HungCao_VA’s big announcements as Acting @SECNAV, several told me the same thing: they’ve brought him small but critical bottlenecks, problems that had languished for years, and watched him personally punch through them, usually without notice or fanfare. That kind of execution deserves serious weight as the Senate considers his nomination for Secretary of the Navy.

So let's see, the issue is whether folks who intentionally evade the prescribed immigration procedures should be treated more favorably than those who follow them? Seems like an easy call.

Nicolas Cage says the Marvel Cinematic Universe "is becoming a well-funded and glorified WWE." “I do say this with love, but when I see these 50-plus and otherwise intelligent and remarkably gifted thespians putting on these ridiculous outfits and getting ready for the fight — let’s face it, it’s all cutting to the fight — it’s hard for me not to be reminded that the MCU is becoming a well-funded and glorified WWE.” variety.com/2026/film/news/n…

Emphasizing via repetition: "The real villain of this piece is whoever talked Jane Doe into believing she was a rape victim."
I've now read a summary of what the Jane Doe in the Cornell alleged gang rape told police immediately after the incident. I must say that I'm struck by how well everyone conducted themselves, and I'm including the men. The woman asked for and got what she wanted. The men she said "no" to took no for an answer. Afterwards, she was up for having sex with male #1 again at a future time, which suggests that he gave the satisfaction he should have. If we're going to have a society of sexual liberty, this is what right conduct looks like. Maybe you think that it was disgraceful for a woman to request a drunken threesome, and for the men to fulfill the request. I won't argue that. When I've been offered sex by an intoxicated woman I found attractive, my policy has been to thank her with an appreciative kiss and then say "Ask me again when you're sober." But whatever this was, it wasn't rape. If women have the right to be treated as adults and make sexual choices for themselves, they have the right to make questionable, drunken choices too. The real villain of these piece is whoever talked Jane Doe into believing she was a rape victim.

"giving the teacher a class of kids who are starting out in roughly the same place" Good points in this piece, but this seems unrealistic, as long as class assignment goes by age. Given broad distribution of ability and prior absorption of basics, most classes will still have kids in different places. To achieve "starting out in same place," a what point should schools start tracking?

Power selects for a specific personality type, and it is not yours. F.A. Hayek spelled this out in 1944. In a centrally planned system, the people who rise are not the most competent or the most honest. They are the most willing to exercise force against strangers, the most comfortable with contradiction, and the most skilled at coalition-building through favors rather than merit. Government filters for the bad ones from the start. The mechanism is straightforward. Political power means controlling resources you did not earn. Capturing that control requires outcompeting rivals who have no ethical constraints. A principled candidate refuses to promise contradictory things to different voter blocs. An unprincipled one does it without blinking. The unprincipled one wins. Repeat this selection pressure across hundreds of electoral cycles and you get the U.S. Congress in 2026: a body where the average member has held office for over a decade, raised millions from interested parties, and delivered almost nothing measurable to the people who voted for them. Bureaucracy compounds the problem. Once entrenched, state agencies attract people who want authority without accountability. You cannot fire most of them. The FDA, the TSA, the Federal Reserve all function this way, staffed by individuals whose career advancement depends on expanding the agency's reach, never on serving you efficiently.
