Just noticed that there are TWO Military Cross winners in this year’s intake of new MPs. In Parliament all veterans of Armed Forces are referred to as gallant but I wonder when the last parliamentary intake was with two gallantry medals? I’m guessing 1950s or 60s with WW2 vets.

Should have added that these two galant honourable gentlemen are Labour’s new MP for Selly Oak and immediately appointed Defence Minister @AlistairCarns and the new Conservative MP for Spelthorne @LincolnJopp. Both are great additions to Parliament.

The last Parliament that had at least 2 MPs with an MC was that elected in 1983, which had Robert Boscawen, Paul Bryan, Anthony Kershaw, Carol Mather, Francis Pym, Patrick Wall and Willie Whitelaw (all originally elected earlier)

Many of Thatcher’s cabinet were balding men with glasses who looked like accountants but had actually been very brave in the War.❤️

Francis Pym and Willie Whitelaw both had won MCs so the 1979 - 1983 cabinet had 2 in Commons; Lord Carington also had won an MC. So from 1979 to 1983 the Foreign Secretary held the MC.

MPs can be called honourable 'and learned' for lawyers or 'and gallant' for veterans. How about 'and numerate' for those with professional experience in finance, science or economics'?
