Gallup doesn’t ask whether ppl support socialism as a system. It asks whether they have “positive/negative image” of the word socialism. No definition given. Gallup has itself said this question measures reactions to the word and that it does not establish what respondents actually mean by socialism. Gallup’s own research found only 17% of Americans defined socialism in the traditional sense of gov ownership or control of biz & economy. More associated it with equality, welfare, social services. Measuring whether ppl like a word whose meaning has become almost meaningless tells us very little about whether they support the system the word originally described.
