After reading the book, I'm still no fan of Mr Musk's brand of world domination mixed with autism. However, there are a few systems and thought processes which drove tech breakthroughs and business deals. Worth reading to grasp the overarching themes.

Forget Plato's Cave The learned helplessness experiment bothers me more. In 1967, Martin Seligman and Steven Maier ran experiments where dogs were exposed to shocks they could not control. Nothing they did stopped what was happening. Later, the dogs were put into a situation where they actually could escape. They just had to cross a small barrier. They didn't. They had already learned that trying was pointless. The door was basically open and they still stayed there. Some pretty ugly implications for humans. Keep someone in a system long enough where working harder changes nothing. Complaining changes nothing and following the rules changes nothing. Trying again changes nothing. Eventually they might stop trying. Then one day an opportunity appears and everyone looking from the outside says, “Why don't they just do something?” They already did. A hundred times. People don't rebel when conditions get bad. Not always. People will shut down and withdraw. They distract themselves and accept shit they once would have fought against. They have learned that fighting changes nothing. Who has to convince people that the cage is good? You don't. You need to convince them the door doesn't open. Eventually you can unlock it and they will never even check.

Je m'attendais à un manifeste libertarien de plus, je me m'étais fourré le doigt dans l'oeil. 🧠 L'idée, en une phrase : et si l'État était un prestataire comme un autre ? Vous signez un contrat. Vous payez une redevance fixe pour la sécurité, la justice et l'infrastructure de base. Le gestionnaire ne peut pas modifier ce contrat sans votre accord. S'il ne rempli pas ses promesses, vous pouvez partir quand vous voulez. C'est le modèle de votre assureur, appliqué à la coexistence. Gebel ici ne vend pas une utopie, il vend un produit. ⚙️ Ce qui m'a le plus parlé, la partie sur les incitations. Sa thèse : les démocraties ne manquent pas de bonnes personnes, elles fonctionnent avec de mauvaises incitations. Celui qui décide ne paie jamais ses erreurs. Personne n'en a. 📖 Reste que c'est le meilleur compte-rendu de l'intérieur sur Próspera que j'ai lu, écrit par celui qui a négocié la ZEDE en 2017, et qui explique sans langue de bois pourquoi tout a fini par déraper. Si vous vous intéressez à l'archipel plutôt qu'à la ruche, c'est une lecture qui compte.
