The irony runs even deeper. Some people insisting that their religion is entirely peaceful are descendants of people who suffered under conquistadors and foreign colonizers who invaded their lands, imposed foreign rule, and spread Christianity through a mixture of missionary work, coercion, and colonial power.
Their ancestors were often taught to abandon or suppress their indigenous beliefs and traditions, while the religion introduced by the colonizers eventually became part of their cultural identity.
Now, generations later, some defend that inherited religion as though its history contains no violence, oppression, or coercion.
