What is a plebiscite?
A plebiscite is a non-binding question, or series of questions, put directly to voters on the ballot, giving residents the opportunity to have their say on an important public issue.
This October 17, we are proposing that Vancouver residents be asked two questions about public safety:
PUBLIC SAFETY PLEBISCITE QUESTIONS:
Vancouver has experienced unprecedented levels of street disorder, open-air hard drug use, and disruption to community safety and individual health. Therefore,
1. Are you in favour of the City of Vancouver strengthening its laws to forbid open-air hard drug (Heroin, Meth, Fentanyl, and Crack) use in public spaces?
AND
2. Should the City of Vancouver formally ask the Province of BC to convert portions of the old St. Paul’s Hospital, or another similar site, into a secure medical facility that provides acute voluntary and 100-plus involuntary care beds for individuals posing a serious risk to themselves or others due to severe substance use and mental health disorders?
While a plebiscite is non-binding, voters can give the next City Council a clear democratic mandate to strengthen municipal bylaws where the City has authority and advocate for action from the Province where it does not.
It would help re-establish social expectations around how we behave in shared public spaces, while supporting compassionate interventions that get people who pose a serious risk to themselves or others into appropriate care — helping reduce the revolving door of severe mental health and addiction crises and relieve pressure on our emergency rooms.
This is about giving Vancouver residents a voice and building a safer, more compassionate city.
We can be kind. We can be compassionate. We can be caring.

Carney ran on a platform of massive increases to home construction + social housing, which has now morphed into a massive transfer of public funds to private developers to get dogshit coffin sized condos off their books.
🚨 Mark Carney says Metro Vancouver has 2,500 completed condos sitting empty.
Developers don't want to sell at a loss.
So Ottawa and BC are stepping in with billions in infrastructure money, cutting development charges by up to 50%, and using financing tools to convert vacant condos into affordable housing.
Later, when asked if governments could buy unsold units from developers, Carney replied:
"You can do both."

Carney is leaving the door open to the possibly that Canada could join the illegal war on Iran. Not exactly what anyone wants to hear.
We are alarmed that Prime Minister @MarkJCarney is refusing to “categorically rule out” Canada’s participation in the war on Iran, even after he acknowledged yesterday that the US-Israeli attacks appear to violate international law.
It shouldn’t be this difficult. Canadians do not want to join this illegal war of aggression, and we refuse to let allow Carney leave that door open.

"List of suspected Nazi war criminals welcomed in Canada should stay secret, information watchdog rules. Some groups and individuals who were consulted by the government about whether to release the secret list had argued doing so could harm Ukraine.
In 2023, there was an outcry after a veteran of the Nazi-led Galicia SS division Yaroslav Hunka, received two standing ovations in the House of Commons during a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
LAC had told Caroline Maynard, the Information Commissioner, that disclosing the list would result in significant injury to Canada’s relationship with a foreign government. LAC also told her it would “cause significant injury to the defence of a foreign state allied with Canada,” Maureen Brennan, an investigator in Ms. Maynard’s office, said in the e-mail.
The e-mail said the harm would extend “beyond Canada’s relations with the foreign government in question” and would adversely affect Canada’s relationships with other allied states.
“I reviewed LAC’s consultation materials and note that there was an overall consensus that, in the current political climate, disclosure of the information would give rise to serious concerns about reasonably expected harm,” Ms. Brennan said.
Dozens of leading scholars from around the world, including Sir Richard Evans, former Regius professor of history at Cambridge University and author of 18 books, including Hitler’s People, have called on Canada to declassify the report.
On Friday Canada’s Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, named after the famous Nazi hunter, reacted with dismay that the information watchdog had upheld Ottawa’s decision to keep the list secret.
“The government’s claim that revealing the truth about Nazi war criminals living in Canada could somehow be a threat to national security or international diplomacy is an insult to the intelligence of the public,” said Jaime Kirzner Roberts, senior director, policy and advocacy at the center.
“It is long past time for the facts to come out about the Nazi perpetrators of genocide and war crimes who were allowed to escape justice and live comfortable, protected lives in our country.”"
