Here's the kicker: the U.S. government collected $5.23 trillion in 2025.
Literally all we have to do is go back to pre-COVID levels of spending and the government would be in a surplus.

The government is not a company. Companies pay dividends. Government does not. Companies sell goods and/or services and make money. The government taxes you on pain of arrest and confiscation of property. If the government were a business with $40 trillion in debt, it’d be out of business. Stop being stupid.

What Vance is saying here is rubbish and he's smart enough to know it. Politicians have been, in effect, bribing voters with their own money forever, but this takes it to a new level, not least because the tariff money wouldn't come close to covering the payouts.

Even if there were no debt, there is no reason to send out $5,000 checks. There is no argument for it. That money is not owed to anyone. There are no equally “owned” revenues that sustain or justify it. It is inflationary and corrupting. This is a non-policy.
I would like to see some progress made on the national debt before the first $5,000 check is mailed out.
