SANDRA BIRCHMORE: BETRAYED IN LIFE. DEVALUED IN DEATH. The medical examiner's testimony in the federal murder trial of Matthew Farwell is nothing short of staggering. What we are witnessing is not simply a series of investigative shortcomings. It is an extraordinary indictment of the institutions entrusted with investigating Sandra's death, including the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Before issuing the May 6, 2021 ruling concerning Sandra Birchmore's death, the medical examiner acknowledged among other things, having no DNA evidence whatsoever. No information about DNA on Sandra's underwear. None concerning the ligature. Nothing. A trove of missed evidence resulted in Capó Martínez often testifying she was blind to any evidence pointing to a potential homicide or suspicious death. Sandra Birchmore was sexually exploited in life. And in death, she was further exploited by the very institutions and investigators whose solemn obligation was to investigate her death with diligence, independence, and an unwavering commitment to the truth. This is an absolute, unmitigated travesty. A grotesque distortion of what the Massachusetts criminal justice system is supposed to represent. The failures exposed in the courtroom before federal investigators intervened demand accountability at every level. Sandra was not merely a body to be examined, a case to be closed, or an inconvenient death to be explained away for the protection of others. She was a human being whose life had value, whose death demanded answers, and whose dignity deserved protection. Instead, the testimony is exposing a system that treated her death with a level of indifference that should outrage every person who believes in justice. Sandra Birchmore deserved justice in life. She deserved a thorough and impartial investigation in death. The Commonwealth failed her in both. It's indefensible.

All paths lead to Tully & Fanning @MassStatePolice Email evidence that Fanning withheld info from the ME - I guess that’s not a rookie move.

Dr. Capo Martinez tells the court that she would have handled her autopsy much differently if she had known it was a possible homicide "I was asked on Feb. 12 to collect," fetal and uterus tissue by the MSP CPAC Feb. 26 was the date she was asked to perform an evidence collection kit - which was well after she had already cleaned the body, "the evidence may be compromised. The body has been handled and washed." Nobody asked her to do an evidence collection kit before 2/26

Big day in Boston's federal court. Matthew Farwell's twin brother Billy slated to take the stand after his defense continues its cross-examination of Sandra Birchmore's therapist, who was a very powerful witness for the government. Billy Farwell told the FBI Norfolk County CPAC was steadfast in its suicide determination. We have also never gotten an explanation for why he was repeatedly running Sandra's name through the FBI's database CJIS, which, as we have learned recently with the flock camera scandals that have led to firings, is wildly illegal. The Medical Examiner who changed her ruling on Birchmore's cause of death this year from "suicide" to "undetermined" could also take the stand. New coverage from @LAmag coming at 9 am and I will drop it here before live tweeting from Boston's federal court.

Good morning from a warm and unexpectedly comfortable Boston. I'm up and ready for live coverage of today's testimony in the Sandra Birchmore and Matthew Farwell trial. Will William "Billy" Farwell and the OCME bring Brian Tully and John Fanning's coverup down once and for all?

Matthew Farwell received his phone back the same day he gave it to Mass State Police. Karen Read still doesn't have 2 cell phones back that were given in Feb 2024 over witness intimidation charges that a grand jury did not indict her on. Matthew Farwell is currently on trial in federal court for the murder of Sandra Birchmore. Karen Read was acquitted of the murder of John O'Keefe in 2025.

Big day of testimony tomorrow from William "Billy" Farwell, the defendant's twin brother. Billy, like his twin, was married with children when he admits to engaging in a sexual relationship with Sandra Birchmore, including coming to her house on duty as a Stoughton Police Officer ten days before she died. Billy Farwell also reported a startling comment to the FBI about the Norfolk County CPAC investigation “Sandra’s death was a suicide, that nothing was criminal, that they weren’t investigating and that they needed an investigation like they, quote, needed a fucking bullet in the head,” AUSA Torey Cummings told the jury in Matthew Farwell’s case in her opening statement.

Just stop! This is my message for those posting comments blaming Sandra Birchmore for other sexual encounters besides Matthew Farwell. Someone commented on a Facebook post recently about Sandra Birchmore: “She’s no angel! What was done to her was wrong, but she knew what she was doing as she got older.” That statement and others like it reflect a profound misunderstanding of grooming and childhood sexual exploitation. As I explained on @JusticeServedTV Sandra's sexual encounters with other men cannot be separated from the grooming that began when she was just 12 years old. Grooming is not simply about obtaining sex from a child. It is about systematically dismantling that child's understanding of love, trust, boundaries, and relationships. Farwell exploited Sandra's vulnerabilities and her admiration for police officers. Through years of relentless manipulation, he conditioned her to associate sexual availability with affection, acceptance, and approval. This is the reason groomers like Farwell can continue to sexually exploit victims into adulthood and leave them vulnerable to exploitation by others. That conditioning did not disappear when Sandra turned 18. A birthday does not erase years of psychological manipulation. What some characterize as promiscuity, actually reflects the lasting consequences of childhood sexual exploitation. Sandra's adult behavior must be understood in the context of what was done to her as a child. As a Juvenile Court judge for more than two decades, I saw firsthand how grooming and sexual trauma can distort a young person's understanding of relationships and personal boundaries. Stop judging and blaming Sandra for behaviors shaped by years of grooming that distorted her understanding of personal boundaries and left her vulnerable to continued sexual exploitation. Just stop.

📣📣📣Sue asked what any of us have actually done to push back on bad policing and corruption. In Norfolk County the answer for a lot of people is simple and ugly: they spoke up and got charged for it. Back in the 1980s I ran for office and won. I wasn’t looking for a title. I was tired of watching the same problems get protected. Later I took the same fight into courtrooms in Eastern Kentucky and Massachusetts. I filed complaints that forced people in authority to be looked at. It cost me time, money, and peace. That’s the ordinary price of refusing to stay quiet. What’s not ordinary is watching a system treat that same kind of effort as something that needs to be punished. That’s what has been happening in Norfolk County. People who documented problems inside the district attorney’s office and the Massachusetts State Police didn’t get answers. They got charges. They got legal bills that most people can’t afford. They got years of proceedings that ate their savings and their energy and made it harder to keep talking. At least one of them is still waiting for his day in court. A lot of ordinary people were left with a choice between shutting up or going broke. The message didn’t need to be spelled out: speak and we will make your life expensive and exhausting. And the taxpayers are covering both sides of it. They pay for the original problems and they pay for the legal fight against the people who pointed them out. Finally, they pay the judgements against the Commonwealth. That’s not accountability. That’s the public being billed so the institutions can protect themselves. People get moved around. The same explanations get repeated. Accountability keeps getting treated like an inconvenience. Coverage that just tells us what happened after the fact isn’t the same as pressure when the pattern includes going after people for speaking. Most of us don’t have subpoenas or internal files. When the local system closes ranks, regular people are left with slow public-records requests, complaints that go nowhere, and the knowledge that the next person who talks may get the same treatment. At some point “we’ve covered this for years” stops being a sufficient answer. At some point the federal government has to look at whether the pattern of going after critics in Norfolk County crosses lines that civil-rights laws were written to address. At some point people in Massachusetts have to demand actual changes: real independent oversight of state police units working inside district attorney offices, outside review of charges filed against critics, and basic transparency on personnel moves and settlements. At some point the media that has reported on these issues has to stop treating every new detail as a separate story and start holding the institutions themselves to account over time. I did what I could from the positions I had. Other people in Norfolk County did it by documenting and speaking, and they got charged. The next step can’t just be another series or another reminder that the press has already written about it. It has to be real structural accountability. Anything less is just accepting that the system gets to protect itself and send the public the bill.
The job of the news media is to inform. The citizens have the actual power. The news media have been covering issues with law enforcement for decades. What have you personally done to improve policing and reduce corruption in your town or state?

Grateful to @LauraIngle for having me on @NewsNation this morning to discuss the Sandra Birchmore case and the critical issues of grooming, sexual exploitation, and the abuse of power that are finally receiving the public attention they deserve. The culture of silence and the circle of protection that surrounded Matthew Farwell for years are as disturbing as the allegations against him. The apparent failures of those who knew, those who looked away, and those entrusted with protecting vulnerable victims demand far greater scrutiny. Sandra Birchmore's case must become more than the prosecution of one man. It must prompt a serious examination of institutional failures, potential criminal accountability for others, and the systems that allowed her exploitation to continue. Justice for Sandra must also mean protecting the next vulnerable child from becoming another victim. @lauraingle -Thank you!

Did you know that being caught on video wearing a mask entering the apartment of someone who is found dead the next day is not viewed as worthy of prosecuting? But putting rubber duckies outside a pizza shop is an all-hands-on-deck emergency for Morrissey’s office? Disgraceful

I always wonder why John never responded to Higgins’ aggressive “you coming here??” text? Then Higgins testified that a ‘tall, dark haired man came in’ & ‘was talking to the girls’ He later attempted to claim that he thought it was ‘the brother’ (implied Julia Nagel’s brother) but no one else testified her brother came in & no one who was with the brother testified that they saw Higgins’ jeep out front where he testified he had parked it. But, as in Sandra Birchmore’s non-investigation when they found out that Higgins was at the party that night he was allowed to turn over his own text messages through an extraction process that destroyed evidence

Reminder in March 2021, Dr. Capo Martinez, who performed Sandra's autopsy for the MA Office of Chief Medical Examiner had ruled both Sandra's cause of death and manner of death as "pending." But Canton police told her aunt ON February 4th she took her own life and troopers assigned to Norfolk County DA determined their investigation was a "suicide" that same day. Which is very unusual for an unattended death. It will be interesting to hear her testimony next week. We have heard testimony that Norfolk County CPAC hosted a police conference at MSP headquarters in 2019, one that then Detective Farwell attended. One OCME presentation included instructions for investigators for evaluating hanging mechanics.

Replying to @MichaelWelshLaw
He has long relied on the premise that the ME did not find the manner of death a homicide with the initial ruling a suicide. Interesting given that he has filed charges in other cases like Walshe where there wasn't even a body much less a finding by the ME.
