This is a very common manipulative tactic. When they anticipate losing an argument, they suddenly lose the ability to understand any context whatsoever and proceed to strip down your point to its barest, most basic and simplistic form, and paint your reaction as excessive and unreasonable. That's when phrases like "all he did was" and "only because" start flying out like missiles. The more you argue, the more overreactive you sound. Very effective, very cunning.
