I have a very basic question: When will those truly responsible for the “eat for free” mentality take responsibility? Politicians refuse to enact and enforce adequate laws, law-enforcement leadership discourages arrests, and prosecutors and judges often fail to impose meaningful consequences. Isn't it time they be held to account for the very inaction that enables dine-and-dash offenses to continue? Rudy Giuliani’s “broken windows” policy recognized a basic truth about human nature: when people inclined toward criminal behavior see offenses going unchecked, they perceive that no one is in charge and no one will intervene. That sense of lawlessness encourages further crime. The only effective deterrent is the consistent enforcement of meaningful consequences. Instead, political and judicial leaders leave ordinary citizens to defend their rights, then punish them when they do. It’s madness. My two cents.
