I have a very basic question: When will those truly responsible for the “eat for free” mentality take responsibility? Politicians refuse to enact and enforce adequate laws, law-enforcement leadership discourages arrests, and prosecutors and judges often fail to impose meaningful consequences. Isn't it time they be held to account for the very inaction that enables dine-and-dash offenses to continue? Rudy Giuliani’s “broken windows” policy recognized a basic truth about human nature: when people inclined toward criminal behavior see offenses going unchecked, they perceive that no one is in charge and no one will intervene. That sense of lawlessness encourages further crime. The only effective deterrent is the consistent enforcement of meaningful consequences. Instead, political and judicial leaders leave ordinary citizens to defend their rights, then punish them when they do. It’s madness. My two cents.

The trial for 'American Idol' alum Caleb Flynn resumes today in Ohio, where the singer is accused of murdering his wife and staging a home invasion. A mother of five is dead and police say the hunter who shot her claims he thought she was a deer when she crossed a field with her children. Authorities say 74-year-old Walter Moorhead fired from a nearby hunting blind, killing 39-year-old Santos Maria Chilel Soto. Moorhead now faces manslaughter, reckless endangerment, as well as multiple firearm and felony charges.
