Cross-country learning is at the heart of the Financing Accelerator Network for NCDs (FAN). Last week in Accra, representatives from six member countries shared lessons on integrating NCDs into UHC reforms—learning from one another and adapting approaches to their own contexts.

She noted that while #NCDs account for the majority of deaths globally, they continue to receive a disproportionately small share of development financing for health, making platforms such as the Financing Accelerator Network for NCDs (FAN) critical for driving collaboration, technical support and country-led solutions. On Day 2 of the Financing Accelerator Network for NCDs (#FAN) Cross-Country Learning Workshop in Accra, Ghana, participants visited Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to learn how the facility is advancing NCD prevention and care, and integrating NCD services into universal health coverage (#UHC). Hospital officials shared insights into the facility’s approach to #NCD care and financing. They highlighted how government-led initiatives, including the National Health Insurance Scheme (#NHIS) and Mahama Care, are helping improve access to healthcare and support the financing of NCD services. African countries have been urged to accelerate the integration of #noncommunicable disease (#NCD) services, essential medicines and diagnostics into universal health coverage (#UHC) reforms to ensure growing #NCD needs are addressed through sustainable and equitable health systems. Speaking at the Sub-Saharan Africa Cross-Country Learning Workshop 2026 in Accra, AFIDEP’s Dr Jackson Otieno, Senior Research and Policy Analyst, called for greater use of evidence to guide NCD financing decisions and strengthen the case for increased domestic investment in NCDs. With NCDs accounting for more than 37% of deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa, Dr Otieno noted that evidence is critical to helping countries identify sustainable financing approaches.
