growing up, the most patriotic woman i knew was a mexican woman who moved to america after her father was killed by the drug cartel. she wrote letters to the bush admin thanking them for supporting expanded legal immigration, her son went on to join the military — and she’s now a huge Atlanta Braves fan. i feel bad for people who can’t see others’ eagerness to study, work, and raise families here for the point of pride it is.

One of the more rabidly patriotic events I’ve ever been too was an extended Middle Eastern family Thanksgiving. To grow up in Baghdad and then get to build a life in San Diego or suburban Michigan seems to consistently foster deep gratitude — and, often, intense national pride.

I live in Texas. On the 4th of July it’s always Hispanic people who are the most decked out in Red, White, Blue and American Flags. Great people who I’m proud to call my neighbors.
