Today I am saddened by the news of Sen. Jon Kyl’s passing. Simply put, without him I don’t know if I’d ever entered into the political world. For me it all started in 1993 when then Congressman Kyl announced he’d be running for Senate to replace the retiring Dennis Deconcini. I started volunteering on his campaign in early fall of 1993 as I entered my sophomore year of college. I went on to become the campaigns first intern and completed two semesters interning until his victory in 1994! The very first day I volunteered at his office, the congressman came into the room where I was entering donation information into their database. He struck up a conversation with a naïve 19 year-old who was trying to make up for voting for Ross Perot for president in 1992 lol. He went on to have many great conversations with me over the next year and a half until his victory. His his wife Caryll and their children were nothing but gracious to anyone that helped or served on the campaign. They led with graciousness and respect. I felt like a fish out of water but they made everyone feel at home. It was his conviction to have civil dialogue with someone else you might not agree with, that formed so many of the views I have about how we should act as society. You can disagree without being disagreeable. You can be strong in your beliefs without ripping down someone else’s. You can put service above yourself.
