Today, 26 October, marks 41 years since the title deeds to Uluṟu–Kata Tjuṯa were returned to Aṉangu Traditional Owners in 1985. A historic moment of justice, made possible by generations of strength, determination and an unbroken connection to Country.
Today we honour Aṉangu, their Elders and families, and remember those who stood alongside them in the struggle for land rights.
Among them was the late Hon. Barry Cohen AM, whose work in the Hawke Government helped make that historic handback possible. Barry was proud of his heritage and he loved Australia. He personally understood the harm of prejudice and devoted much of his public life to fighting discrimination and protecting our precious Country.
Last month, I shared this special moment with Tjamu Reggie Uluru, his granddaughter Jody Hampton and Barry’s granddaughter Eliya, as Tjamu Reggie presented Eliya with a signed copy of I Am Uluru, for the Cohen family.
Two families, connected through a remarkable chapter in our nation’s history. The next generations carrying those stories, friendships and legacies forward.
Our connection to Country is sacred. It lives in our stories, our responsibilities, our Elders and our children.
Let us always remember those who stood with us. Who listened. Who respected our connection to land. Who used their voice and their position to help make justice possible.
Today we honour Aṉangu and the enduring legacy of those who walked beside them.
