We’re continuing to celebrate all 109 Miss Mareworthy contestants in order from earliest birth date to most recent. Our next experienced lady showed the public that she is nowhere near finished. Meet Splash of Winter, better known as Splash, who is 25 years young and one of the 13 mares who advanced to the Miss Mareworthy judging round. Her 752 public votes placed her in a tie for ninth. Born in Kansas on February 6, 2001, Splash made just two starts as a 2-year-old and earned $126 before leaving the racetrack. Her best chapters were still ahead. Splash spent the next 20 years as a successful Adult and Children’s Hunter. Then her career suddenly stopped when she developed headshaking syndrome. When she did not settle into life as a lesson horse, she was put away in a stall and, for a time, forgotten. She lost weight, muscle and what her Miss Mareworthy interview described as her sense of purpose. Then someone looked beyond Splash’s age and saw what was still there. With medication, changes to her environment and plenty of individual attention, she began to feel like herself again. Her weight returned, her muscles came back and eventually she was floating around an arena and jumping once more. Splash was then given to Morgan Ford, an 11-year-old rider who had outgrown her pony. Splash believed in Morgan, Morgan believed in Splash and their partnership began changing both of their lives. Just 18 months after Splash had been standing forgotten in a stall, she and Morgan won the Open 2' Hunter Derby at the World Equestrian Center against 40 entries. They also qualified for the KHJA Medal Finals this fall. At 25, Splash still floats around the arena like a princess, knows her job and expects Morgan to ride correctly. Morgan is usually happy to admit that Splash is right. “I may have been down and out, but I certainly wasn’t finished.” Splash’s story is a reminder that a difficult chapter does not have to be the final one. Her trust, experience and determination have helped Morgan grow from an 11-year-old with a pony into a stronger, more thoughtful rider. Only one mare will ultimately be crowned Miss Mareworthy, but this pageant was created to put a name, a face and a story to the qualities Thoroughbred mares carry: Mindful, Authentic, Resilient and Expressive.
