We didn’t get off to the best start when Josh’s first runner finished last on Travers Day in a G1 (my fault) 🤦‍♂️, but credit to him for keeping the faith. I love his enthusiasm and willingness to learn. The common denominator in this sport is that you have to love it, and Josh certainly does.

The Good Life is not going to run again this year. We were hoping to make the @BreedersCup, but he needs time. He will get 30 days in paddock, and 30 days of light training. No surgeries. He will be back for his 3yo campaign. Aurthur Hancock used to tell me, “if you do right by the horse, they will do right by you.” Grateful to train for him and prayers are with his family.

Real talk for all who follow Jesus. So many times it is easy to play the “Grace card”. I admit I have done many times. Following Jesus does come with a cost. But it is way worth it! Faith without works is dead. Real faith puts action into action! Have a blessed day

It’s time to head home, but a few hospitality thoughts are worth sharing. @keenelandsales has made the experience noticeably more comfortable and welcoming. The new facility, especially the 1936 Room, offers a cool, comfortable place to relax while keeping up with both the sale and the races. The breakfast and lunch options in the new structure are another welcome improvement, making it easier to settle in and stay focused throughout the day. Most of all, Morgan and her team continue to find thoughtful, creative ways to look after buyers. Their attention to detail is a big part of why Keeneland’s hospitality seems to improve with every visit.

Arthur B. Hancock III died peacefully earlier today at his home at Stone Farm near Paris, Ky., with family by his side. He had waged a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Arthur made his mark in the horse industry in so many ways – as a Thoroughbred owner, breeder and consignor and more importantly as someone who fought tirelessly for a cleaner, drug-free sport. He and wife Staci were the heart and soul of the Water Hay Oats Alliance, pushing for national medication policies that came to fruition with the creation of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority. His impact was worldwide; selling Sunday Silence to Zenya Yoshida's Shadai Farm when American breeders showed little interest in breeding to the 1989 Horse of the Year reshaped Japan's Thoroughbred industry, helping make it a global force. Arthur was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame last year as a Pillar of the Turf, a most deserved honor. He'll be inducted posthumously in the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame next month. He loved family, horses and music, a pretty solid trifecta. Staci Hancock said arrangements will be forthcoming. Condolences to his family and his many friends throughout the world.

Later today there is a $100 million horse race. The Travers Stakes at Saratoga is the premier race for 3-year-olds in the second half of the year. The purse is $1.25 million. The horses' combined value in the race - over $100 million. A top 3-year-old colt isn't priced on what he can win on the track. He's priced on what he'll earn in the breeding shed. A stallion at the top of the market covers 200+ mares a year at $250,000 per mare, and can breed for 15-20 years. That's ~$50 million a year of cash flow. Races like the Travers are what set those prices. A win against the best of his generation can add eight figures to a colt's value in about two minutes. A loss could cut it in half. The racing is the marketing. The breeding is the business.
