Congress is looking at a bill that would hold local officials responsible for looking the other way when fraud is identified.
The Trump administration wants to make it mandatory that ANYONE who defrauds the federal governmentโs benefit programs, receives prison time.
- 1 year minimum under $40,000.
- Up to LIFE for $100 million or more. No probation.
We all know that the Republicans will vote for this, but the Democrats wonโt because that is how their donors and family make extra money.
On Oct. 3, Trump called on Congress in a video to pass mandatory minimum prison sentences for anyone convicted of stealing from Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security. Probation would no longer be an option, sentences would grow with the amount stolen and double for repeat offenders. State and local officials who knowingly ignore fraud could be held personally liable for the losses. "If you steal from the American people, you will go to prison," Trump said.
Under current federal law, health care fraud usually carries up to 10 years in prison and Social Security fraud up to five, with no mandatory minimum, and judges can impose probation. Trump did not name a bill or say how long the minimum sentences should be.
