I was not a Dolly Parton fan. I just wasn’t into country music, I suppose, and I didn’t really know much about her until we had kids.
Her Imagination Library program, which DC hospitals suggest signing up for in the maternity ward, is one of the more beautiful, simple, and effective forms of charity I think I’ve ever seen.
For those who don’t know about it, you sign up and an age-appropriate picture book shows up at your address every month for years.
My kids loved many of these books and started noticing her picture on the back with the program logo. We explained who she was, and “thank you, Dolly Parton” became a goodnight ritual in our house.
RIP, and thank you. We need more folks like you in the world.
