Australia 🇦🇺 New Zealand 🇳🇿 I'm coming back for An Evening of Idle Conversation. Expect ridiculous stories, old friends, and the absurdly unpredictable journey of building a house in France over fifty five years when it grew from a shack to a Shackeau.

Our Ramses planetary defence spacecraft has been switched on for the first time, a major milestone on the way to its 2028 launch. The ESA-JAXA mission will rendezvous with asteroid Apophis and study it during its exceptionally close flyby of Earth in April 2029. 🔗esa.int/Space_Safety/Planeta…

Today in 1977, Voyager 1 took this image of the Earth and Moon in a single frame, captured from 7.25 million miles away. It was the first of its kind taken by a spacecraft.

If you were at my show this evening in Ljubljana when we looked live at the Deep Space Network and saw it communicating with @NASARoman - this is what was going on :-)
Sometimes your eyes need a minute to focus when you wake up. Roman's Wide Field Instrument just woke up for the first time EVER, and scientists have started adjusting its "eyes" so they can focus on the bigger picture. Check out its first test image below go.nasa.gov/4j51w30

This is good news, and as the article points out, signals a welcome change from the previous administration. There is a sense of optimism for the first time in a while - UKRI should read the room and reverse the damaging (and I have to say not well documented) decision to de-prioritise huge swathes of basic research.

Walking home a few minutes ago across the Charles Bridge in Prague ahead of the live show here tomorrow - it will be a special night for me because the entire Emergence show is inspired by the story of Johannes Kepler walking across this bridge in a New Year’s snow storm in 1609 and wondering about the origin of the six fold symmetry of a snowflake - the beginnings of modern science.

The LZ dark matter search has observed a single unexplained event Many discoveries have begun with a single anomalous event, but so have even more false alarms. So we wait. Typically, direct-detection experiments have excellent control over their backgrounds
Our new results are out! We have observed a single nuclear recoil in our detector that we find difficult to explain with our background model. Could it be a hint of dark matter? It’s far too early to say, but it’s certainly intriguing! #darkmatter
