Anyone else think the person who earns the most votes should be elected president, not the winner of some harebrained electoral college system?

95% of all presidential campaign events in the last 2 elections took place in 12 swing states. The electoral college makes 38 states not matter, so yeah, it should be revisited.

Yeah. America is thrilled at the prospect of a few populous areas dictating in perpetuity to everyone else. The Framers knew better.

No, Comrade Secretary. The Electoral College is a representation of the states, not the general population. This isn't complicated. It's 8th grade civics. By the way, were it not for the Electoral College, we'd never know your name and you'd still be a 3rd rate academic.

That harebrained electoral college system is what keeps this country from becoming an authoritarian country. But it seems you leftist, liberals want that sort of thing.

I like the electoral college. I don’t want California and NY deciding who runs a whole country: those states are a mess

I don't want presidential elections to turn into candidates jetting between America's top 10 metro areas promising light rail. I live in a coastal city, but I also like wheat, beef, chicken, eggs, national defense, and think a president should represent all...

The constitution was designed specifically with provisions for changing it. The most anti-constitution anti-America stance you can take is the one you just did.

No Bob. @RBReich It’s not a popular vote. It’s a constitutional republic and the electoral college works as it’s supposed to. A former Cabinet member should be smarter.

That's not a democratic republic. You know that. That is mob rule. What is hairbrained about making sure everyone is heard?

Keep trying to change rules till you can win. I definitely (do not) trust your judgement way more than the founding fathers!

No. I think all states should be represented. Not your chosen few.

You don't even believe it, you just want your tribe to win. If Republicans got the popular vote you'd be crying for an electoral college. Because you're a power lusting hack with zero integrity or sense of morals.

Avoiding majoritarian tyranny is "harebrained".

Yes that’s because the Founding Fathers where fully aware of the need to mitigate against Tyranny of the Majority which is one of the potential outcomes of unfettered Democracy, but you already know this.

It should be hereditary. Primogeniture. So Hunter Biden.

I’m sure you would love for Cali, Illinois and New York to decide every election…. 🤡

i have listened to people passionately defend the electoral college to me, only to admit eventually that if it were NOT for the electoral college system, Republicans would never win another election. The reason for that is simple: Republicans are an extremist minority ideology.

Pretty radical idea. I think we should keep with a system created by slaveholders born 300 years ago.

The electoral college must be reformed for democracy to survive. The founding fathers would've never intended on having the minority dictate over the majority as it stood against everything they believed.

You obviously don't believe in 'democracy' then if you believe that overpopulated counties should be able to elect the president.

Our system needs a makeover; every branch is designed to give the minority an unfair advantage. The # of US Senators should be based on population. Gerrymandering is designed to defy the majority. The EC allows the loser to win. SCOTUS: term limits and put them on the ballot.

You would love that. Majority rule by the left and right coast liberals, leaving all the people in the middle to twist in the wind. How is that fair?

I agree! The electoral collage system has given us to many minority rule by the GOP! So many of the GOP won by the electoral collage & lost the popular vote. Plus we need term limits for all judges, SC, House & the Senate. No one should have a job for years and years!

More democracy means more citizens voting. And more citizens will vote if every vote has equal worth. When some votes have more worth, that’s a big step toward tolerating privilege, preference, elites, and in our case, the Whitemanistan that Republicans desire.

Agreed, Prof. Reich. The NationalPopularVote.com campaign will nullify the Electoral College. Please consider supporting it. We are 72% of the way there. #NationalPopularVote #SupportDemocracy

I know this is rhetorical, Mr. Secretary, but electoral college and distribution of Senate seats were part of the basic bargain that brought the original states together. Pure national majority rule is a very different bargain than a union of States.
