🚨| Wolff Discusses Ongoing Struggle with Depression:
— Toto Wolff has spoken candidly about experiencing periods of depression since he was 18, stressing the importance of prominent F1 figures discussing mental health openly. Wolff revealed:
“I don’t want to stop in a way thinking about that tomorrow could be really bad. Doesn’t mean I’m a miserable person all along, but it keeps my skepticism intact.”
“I’ve suffered from periods of depression from the age of 18 onwards, couldn’t kind of define what that was, why was I feeling so dark?”
— When those periods became too difficult to manage alone, Wolff sought professional support from psychiatrists and psychologists. He explained:
“That really helped me to analyze why I was feeling that way and how the tools that were given to me, to utilize these moments of reflection and introspection.”
“It’s very difficult to describe that actually in a way of there is no hope for your future.”
— However, Wolff believes the sensitivity associated with vulnerability can also become a strength, particularly when understanding and leading others. He explained:
“I realized it’s a superpower to have that sensitivity. That can drag you very low because you’re vulnerable, but it also gives you that superpower of reading a room easy.”
— Wolff praised figures such as Lewis Hamilton for speaking publicly about their experiences, helping others understand that even severe periods can eventually pass. He emphasized:
“Even if you can’t see light at the end of the tunnel, because things are so bad, it always ends.”
— Wolff also credited his family and friends, particularly Susie Wolff, for supporting him through difficult periods. He shared:
“Susie has been tremendous, kept the system going when I was not capable of doing it.”
— Above all, Wolff encouraged people struggling to cope to seek qualified professional support rather than relying solely on casual advice. He stressed:
“If you’re open minded about looking after yourself and speaking to somebody else, seeking professional help… this is going to pass.”
