It’s the missing context that the inconvenient board member said all the things about which the Mayor pretends to be ignorant directly to the Mayor.
It’s an unusually obvious bit of 4th floor hypocrisy.
Should I pretend to be shocked that someone inconvenient was bumped from a board? What kind of Mayor is going to let an ideological opponent stay there?
