The interesting thing about the AI doomer op over the past couple weeks is that sometimes these things are just a little too obviously coordinated, so one can see the process. Viral whistleblower. Founder essay. Perfectly placed op-ed. Politician’s speech. Wall-to-wall reaction. All in a few days. There are people who are professionals at this. Because sometimes you need a crisis to get crazy shit done. George Floyd —> BLM. Ukraine impeachment. Harvey Weinstein —> MeToo/TimesUp. The Iranian 1953 CIA coup. The Reichstag fire. 205 communists in the State Dept! There are witches in Salem! Sometimes you need to wait for one legit thing to get it rolling. Sometimes you can manufacture the thing. The critical next step is to characterize the event as the worst thing ever and insist that it’s urgent, dangerous, and widespread — and definitely not a one off. It’s the secret truth. Get the hysteria going. Burn it all down!!! Roll out the over-heated think pieces. Things must change — NOW!! If that all works right, you can do whatever crazy ill-considered shit you want. For a while, anyway.
