B.C. Premier David Eby just called a snap election, only two years after the last one.
He called it just after the B.C. Conservative leader stepped down. That’s opportunism, and taxpayers will foot the multi-million dollar bill.
But the stunt may backfire. The Conservatives have already united behind Lorne Doerksen, an earnest former rodeo competitor caught on camera fighting a wildfire.
People who think they’re smart often outsmart themselves. Eby may be headed for an epic faceplant.

The PBO released its report on the Carney government’s operating budget fiscal anchor.
The PBO formally states, “Attributions of certain tax or spending initiatives as operating versus capital appear contradictory and would benefit from a more formal methodology motivation.”
In other words, the Carney government’s definition of operating vs. capital is nonsensical.
The PBO also states, “the lack of specific definitions to the initiative level constrained the ability to assess whether the anchor would function as a binding discipline on overall federal spending in practice or serve more as a directional guide as to high-level values for the government.”
In other words, the Carney government’s nonsensical definition of operating vs. capital is a smoke screen and creates confusion about what actually is going on with federal finances.
Mr. Carney should abandon this methodology and simply stick with long-standing operating and capital definitions under the Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB) standards.

Breathtaking hypocrisy.
A central criticism of MAGA is that it has degraded democratic norms.
That's *exactly* what Eby has done with this transparently cynical election call chosen for only one reason: to exploit a pending leadership change in his main opposition party.
Principled voices across the political spectrum should denounce this assault on longstanding democratic norms.
Trump is attacking our jobs, driving up our costs and threatening our ability to make decisions for ourselves, in our own country, for our own people. He wants to make Canada and B.C. an extension of America.
For B.C. and for Canada, this is an existential moment. We have to decide as a province how we respond, and British Columbians deserve a say.
That's why today I called an election for October 24.
When Trump came after Canada, I didn't flinch. We pulled American liquor off the shelves and hit back where it hurt.
I'm working with the Prime Minister to hold the line, and we've got a plan to stand up to Trump, protect workers and businesses, and build a stronger B.C. that's less dependent on the U.S.
It's making a difference. But the job is far from done.
The conservative parties would cozy up to Trump, make cuts, raise costs and invite U.S. corporations into our health care. With Trump at our door, we cannot afford their chaos.
That's the choice in front of us.
