Anna, your idealised portrayal of Russian family values overlooks some deeply uncomfortable facts. In 2017, Putin signed legislation decriminalising certain first offences of domestic battery, reducing penalties for violence against family members, including women and children. Human Rights Watch has documented serious failures to protect victims of domestic violence, including inadequate police responses, limited access to shelters and the absence of comprehensive protective legislation. In 2024, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child called on Russia to explicitly prohibit corporal punishment in the home. It also raised serious concerns about inadequate investigations into child sexual abuse and failures to protect victims. Russia has also faced substantial alcohol-related mortality, drug-related deaths and significant challenges in HIV prevention and treatment. But perhaps the most disturbing contradiction between the Kremlin's rhetoric about family values and the conduct of Russian authorities concerns Ukraine. On 18 September 2026, the UN Human Rights Office published a report documenting 1,004 cases of conflict-related sexual violence in Ukraine between February 2022 and July 2026. The UN attributed 89% of these documented violations to Russian authorities, including members of the armed forces, prison service and security agencies. The youngest documented rape survivor was a four-year-old girl. The oldest was an 82-year-old woman. In both cases, the UN attributed the rape to Russian authorities. The report also documents rape, gang rape, genital mutilation and sexual torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians. These are not allegations invented by Western social-media accounts. They are findings documented by the United Nations through survivor interviews, official records and other evidence. The UN has separately documented the deportation and forcible transfer of Ukrainian children by Russian authorities, separating children from their families. None of this means ordinary Russian people do not love their families or value their culture. But romanticising Russia while overlooking documented failures to protect women and children, and the sexual violence committed by Russian authorities against Ukrainian civilians, presents a profoundly incomplete picture. Family values should begin with protecting children from abuse, preventing domestic violence and respecting the right of families to live together in safety. Helt oaktat hur det till sist visar sig vara och vad som går att bevisa angående olika oegentligheter vid det svenska riksdagsvalet är det uppenbart att något behöver göras. Även om det (högst osannolikt) visar sig att allt gått rätt till har medborgarnas tilltro till den demokratiska processen och de fria valen skadats. Detta är till och med ett större problem än om en person lyckats fuska sig in i Riksdagen. Inför valet har många myndigheter arbetat med att säkra upp processen och skydda den från yttre påverkan. Det verkar i stor utsträckning ha fungerat. Insatserna på cyber- och informationspåverkans områdena verkar ha fått god effekt. Problem är att hotet denna gång tycks komma inifrån. Jag vet inte exakt vad som behöver eller kan göras, men jag utgår från att nästa regering tillsätter en haverikommission för att utreda det. Det tåls att upprepas; visar det sig att inte ett enda fel begåtts så har tilltron till processen ändå skadats. TIlltron måste snabbt byggas upp igen, kosta vad det kosta vill. Det är också tydligt att Valmyndigheten behöver ytterligare resurser redan nu för att förbereda nästa val. Ingen svensk myndighet kan vara mer prioriterad de kommande fyra åren. Nästa val måste bli ett skolboks exempel på hur öppna, fria och demokratiska val genomförts i ett civiliserat land. Om jag som lekman ändå tänker högt finns vissa saker som borde kunna göras: 1. En nationell kampanj om varför vi går till val i syfte att skapa uppslutning kring processen och öka valdeltagandet. 2. Riktade kampanjer från relevant myndighet mot de grupper som är extra utsatta för påverkan. 3. Civilsamhället måste mobiliseras i de områden där problemen varit extra stora. 4. Partierna måste, helt uppenbart, bättre granska sina kandidater och säkra sina nomineringsprocesser. 5. En massiv kraftsamling från alla inblandade myndigheter behöver planeras redan nu och pågå från det att förtidsröstningen öppnar till dess att den sista rösten räknats så att hela kjedjan från vallokal till slutgiltig rösträkning säkras. Säkerheten och tryggheten måste prioriteras så att valfunktionärer och andra vågar agera när de tycker att något känns fel. Men glöm inte det viktigaste! Ytterst är det vienskilda medborgare som också kan påverka och bidra. Amäl dig som röstmottagare eller rösträknare. I Sverige är rösträkningen i vallokalerna och sluträkningen hos Länstyrelserna dessutom offentliga - se till att vara där även om du inte är rösträknare! Låt det som skett i anslutning till valet 2026 inte bli ytterligare en datapunkt på en negativ kurva av ökad polarisering och minskad demokrati. Låt de olika brister som blivit uppenbara i årets val i stället bli den väckarklocka vi alla tydligen behövde för att inse hur snabbt det kan gå utför och hur skör vår demokrati är. Vi står i ett vägskäl. Tillsammans har vi en möjlighet att skydda, vitalisera och utveckla vår demokrati. Men kom också ihåg att det blir vad vi tillsammans väljer att göra och inget annat! All offentlig makt utgår från folket!
