The external report on UVU's actions in the Charlie Kirk shooting is out. Behind the jargon is a simple finding: The university was responsible for the safety of everyone at the event and that it was negligent. As a result, Charlie Kirk was killed. deseret.com/education/2026/0…

The Wall Street Journal article is clearer about specific security failures that day: ➡️TPUSA and UVU both underestimated the size of the crowd, which made planning inadequate. ➡️UVU police were understaffed for a university of its size. ➡️No security walk-through before the event. ➡️UVU took 19 minutes to alert campus of the presence of a shooter. The messages sent in the first hour were contradictory and confusing.
An independent review found deficiencies in how Utah Valley University and Turning Point USA handled his campus event. on.wsj.com/4yiUGfh

Browsing the report, the authors avoid assigning blame, and they never use the words "negligent" or "negligence." As a result, the assassination sounds like a freak event or an unfortunate confluence of events (almost like an act of God). Clearly the lawyers vetted this report and are trying to minimize UVU's civil liability. That being said, the report reveals more shortcomings from TurningPoint than the media had previously reported. I asked Grok to list the ten biggest mistakes that led to the circumstances that got Kirk killed and to assign blame where possible. TurningPoint deserves more blame than they have received so far (though UVU still deserves the majority).

Having the resources and time to build up DEI in an organization is a luxury. Once real challenges present themselves, DEI gets immediately depriorizied because it is a drain on effectiveness, resources, and attention.
University leaders were asked about their most pressing concerns. The DEI options — “racial equity issues” and “identity-based harassment” — are barely on their radar. They’re too busy worrying about finances, enrollments, public perceptions, and government policies.

The University of Texas is combining its majors in African and African diaspora studies; Mexican American and Latina/o Studies; women's and gender studies; and "race, indigeneity and migration" into a "social and cultural analysis" major. Missing from the reporting: these are all low-enrollment majors. Across all four, the university awarded 30 bachelor's degrees. That's less than 0.3% of the 11,000 bachelor's degrees awarded last year. A similar consolidation is happening in the university's foreign language majors. share.google/mu4aWhuXouaDv9R…

It's remarkable that the flagship university in one of the largest, most Hispanic states in the country can only convince 4 students per year to major in "Mexican American and Latina/o Studies." You don't have to be MAGA or a critic of academia to question whether such an unpopular major deserves financial support.

BREAKING: An advisory panel on accreditation has recommended that the Department of Education suspend the American Psychological Association (APA) for 12 months amidst concerns about ideological standards on DEI, gender-related treatment, and especially antisemitism. After hearing from several groups during a meeting yesterday, the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity’s (NACIQI) voted to make the recommendation. The recommendation now goes to the Department of Education for a final decision.

Cambridge is no longer planning to investigate Jason Arday’s academic record or the university’s decision to hire or cover for him. Instead, the investigation will focus on “his welfare, his care, his well-being” and “whether the school offered him sufficient support amid accusations that he plagiarized.”
It’s all too predictable.

The judge made the correct ruling. The government doesn't have to grant press passes to anyone. But once it does, it needs to give passes to all similarly situated media outlets, not choose on the basis of which outlets say what it likes.

Why did it take the government so long to realize that it wasn't 1965 any more? These cases were open for far too long. In Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, the courts ruled that the district had integrated in 1975. Their federal supervision remained for 51 more years!
Justice Department Ends Over 50 Half-Century-Old Desegregation Cases Throughout the United States “In this administration, we are ending prolonged federal oversight of these school districts because the effort does not reflect the reality of those classrooms today,” said @AAGDhillon. “In some cases, school districts have been under federal control for more than 60 years. Now these local school districts can redirect taxpayer dollars back to benefitting students, instead of funding onerous and outdated consent decrees.” Read more: justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-d…
