On September 6, 2006, emergency room nurse Susan Walters (then Kuhnhausen), 51, came home in Portland, Oregon, to find an intruder, 59-year-old hitman Edward Walter Haffey, in her master bedroom. He attacked her with a claw hammer, hitting her head repeatedly. Using her ER training, Susan fought back, disarming Haffey and putting him in a chokehold. She demanded to know who sent him, promising an ambulance if he told her. When he refused, she maintained the hold until he stopped breathing. After checking for a pulse, Susan called 911. Investigators found Haffey dead from asphyxiation. Susan, injured but cleared of wrongdoing, acted in self-defense. Police later found that Susan's estranged husband, Michael Kuhnhausen, hired Haffey for $50,000 due to their divorce and his financial issues. Michael was arrested, pleaded guilty to solicitation to commit murder, and received a ten-year sentence. He died of cancer in prison in 2014. Susan has since remarried, become an advocate for violent crime survivors, and was honored by the Portland Police Bureau for her bravery 💪🏼
