Deputy Mayor Appiah recently participated in a video marking the upcoming 20th anniversary of @DC_SAFE, a vital partner in our community’s response to domestic violence. @DC_SAFE is committed to survivor-defined advocacy and we thank them for their work.

We gathered this morning to recognize the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on our nation. No one knew in those moments who the targets were, but we knew it was our freedom and our democracy under attack. Twenty five years later, we still remember the lives of all those Washingtonians we lost, including six members of our DCPS community—3 students and 3 educators. We still and will always remember, reflect, and pray for the nearly 3,000 lives lost.

Today is an important day to recognize the extreme professionalism, bravery, courage, and preparedness of the first responders who serve us all in Washington, DC. In the 25 years since 9/11, our first responders have shown up for many major events. Many of which, most people will never hear about. It remains our duty to make sure that our funding, systems of support, and methods of training remain strong for those first responders. And to make sure that we honor DC’s Bravest by honoring our commitments.

25 years later, we remember September 11 and honor the courage and sacrifice of the first responders who answered the call. Today, we honor the brave men and women of @dcfireems who continue to serve and protect our community. We remember. We honor. We will never forget.
