Physical crude prices soar as oil futures stall
Physical crude prices have surged to the highest since the opening weeks of the war with Iran despite claims that increased tanker transits through the Strait of Hormuz and bypass pipelines have largely restored exports from the Gulf.
Spot prices for the North Sea Forties crude stream (one of the largest components of the Brent crude complex) are currently being quoted over $140 per barrel, the highest since the war began.
Forties output has been threatened after offshore workers voted to strike but prices had been climbing long before the industrial dispute came to a head.
Dated Brent for immediate delivery has averaged more than $123 so far in October, passing the previous high of $116 in April, and the highest for more than four years, after adjusting for inflation.
Cash prices for the principal crude grades from West Africa, among the main alternatives to Brent, are all quoted above $135.
Physical prices are trading well above the front-month Brent futures contract, which has averaged just $102 so far in October.
The gap between physical and futures prices is the widest since the war began and the broadest in records back for more than a decade ...

Reuters counted only a couple of dozen rare earth separation and refining experts across the US, Europe and Japan last October. China has thousands, and refines about 90% of the world's rare earths.
At least 11 Chinese universities run dedicated rare earth degree programs. No comparable undergraduate degree exists anywhere else.
MP Materials' Texas magnet campus and USA Rare Earth's South Carolina plant both commission in 2028. A student who started a US mining degree this month graduates in 2030.
Washington put more than $180 million into mining education in August, most of it still awaiting appropriation. Bloomberg counts more than $10 billion committed to US rare earths and magnets.
